Chickens
We typically keep about 15 laying hens on the farm year-around so we have plenty of eggs. Each spring we get a few new pullets to replace some of the older hens (they become stewing hens.) This year we have 8 replacement laying hens that are about 8 weeks old in the picture below. Four are Barred Rocks and four are Black Sex Links.
This year we are raising about 150 broiler chickens. They are in three groups of 50 each, staggered 2 weeks apart. The oldest group is 5 weeks old and the youngest is a little over 1 week old. This year we are using “slow white broilers” as the breed, which are a variation of Cornish cross that is ready for harvest at about 10 weeks of age. See below for a selection of pictures
